Our Visible Learning

Visible Learning at CHS

At Chesnee High School, we want every student to grow, succeed, and feel confident in their learning. To make this happen, our teachers use Visible Learning practices, based on the research of John Hattie. ThisPictures from around Chesnee High School work helps us focus on what matters most for student success and ensures that learning is clear, meaningful, and connected to each student’s goals.

For the past several years, CHS has been part of a district-wide effort to strengthen teaching and learning. Our teachers collaborate regularly to plan lessons, share strategies, and study practices that have been proven to help students learn at high levels. We also partner with experts to provide training that keeps instruction consistent, challenging, and focused on growth across every classroom.

At CHS, students don’t just complete assignments; they are encouraged to take ownership of their learning and rise to the challenge of Boldly Embracing the Standard #BEtheSTANDARD. Teachers help students reflect on four important clarity questions every day:

  1) What am I learning?
  2) Why am I learning it?
  3) How will I know I have learned it?
  4) What are my next steps?

When students can answer these questions, they understand the purpose of their work, recognize their progress, and know how to keep moving forward. This empowers them to be confident, independent learners who set the standard for excellence.

It is our hope that students actively engage in tracking their progress throughout each unit of study by using Success Criteria (SC). Teachers provide and consistently reference these Success Criteria, which take the form of “I can” statements. These statements help students understand what they are expected to learn, recognize what they already know, and identify areas where they need to grow. This process encourages students to take ownership of their learning and ask meaningful questions.

Because assessments are aligned with the Success Criteria, students can view their learning as a journey and approach assessments with greater confidence, knowing they are prepared. When students attend school regularly, participate actively in class, and reflect on both their strengths and areas for growth, they develop the confidence needed to be successful on assessments.

Visible Learning is more than a program at Chesnee High; it is part of who we are. It shapes how teachers plan, how students learn, and how we work together to create classrooms that are clear, engaging, and challenging. Our goal is simple: to make sure every Eagle has the tools, support, and confidence to succeed because at CHS, we don’t just meet the standard, we #BEtheSTANDARD.
